“Sea Shanty” Workshop & Performance
Tom Kastle and Kathy Whisler co-presenters
Tuesday, March 24 from 7 to 9pm
doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Sea shanties are traditional work songs used on sailing ships in the 19th century. Their call and response structure makes them easy and fun to sing and play, so as the age of sail waned they found new life as drinking songs and folk songs. This workshop, co-presented by Kathy Whisler and Tom Kastle, will present some background and history about the lively songs plus an opportunity to participate in a fun and rousing sing-along. Tom is a maritime musician, tall ship captain, one of the founders of the Chicago Maritime Festival, and a faculty member at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Kathy is a singer of sea shanties and has been leading and organizing the Chicago sea shanty sing-along for over five years. At the end of the workshop session, all will visit the live Folk Festival radio show and perform an on-air group shanty sing!
Refreshments are free. The fun will be priceless!
