Sons of the Never Wrong is an acclaimed folk trio based in the Chicago area, comprised of three wonderful talents: Bruce Roper, Deborah Lader, and Sue Demel, creating original "turbo-charged folk music" for a cult-like national following. Folk Festival host Lilli Kuzma considers Sons "the best band in the whole wide world, since the beginning of time!" 'Nuff said.
The band was formed in '92 when Demel and former bandmate Nancy Walker heard Bruce Roper performing his quirky, yet poetic style of songwriting at a local club. The three singer-songwriters with backgrounds in rock (Nancy), folk (Bruce), and jazz (Sue), instantly knew there was some kind of magic in the mix and devoted themselves to creating their own brand of folk music. Their work is decidedly eclectic; in that the odd background influences, witty song crafting, added to 3-part harmony that swirls in and out of space, makes them different than most of the folk music you've heard.
Eight years ago when Walker ventured back out into the world as a solo artist, the band was fortunate to find multi-instrumentalist Deborah Lader to step in and bring her own clever style of writing, expressive voice, and bluegrass /Celtic influences to sons. Bruce Roper, weaned on the Beatles and Dylan, is the primary songwriter of the band, and plays acoustic guitar and sings with a sweet, yet heart-broken quality. Sue Demel offers up her own song originals, and sparkles with her vocal acrobatics and inspired harmonies as she keeps the beat on the djembe drums or quietly strums the dulcimer. Deborah Lader delights audiences with her flair for banjo, mandolin, guitar, and rich alto harmonies.
The Sons' CD releases have brought them stunning national and international reviews as well as extensive radio-play. But it is their live performances that win the audience's hearts. The group can barely stand still on stage and insty-choreography results in a non-stop show of stories, dancing, and odd-ball humor. Yet it is when the 3 step up to the mic and give out one of many stunningly arranged songs, that you know you are in for something special.
Some music you've got to hear to enjoy, this you gotta see...
